Publix Charities Makes Its Largest Hunger Donation Yet at $25 Million for Hunger Action Month

    Key Takeaways

    • Publix Super Markets Charities made its largest hunger donation yet, $25 million, up $10 million from last year.

    • The gift reaches more than 350 food banks and nonprofits, including 43 Feeding America partner food banks across Publix's eight-state Southeast footprint.

    • The donation brings the charity's total investment to end hunger to more than $103 million since 2015.

Publix timed its biggest hunger gift yet to the month built around the problem. During Hunger Action Month, Publix Super Markets Charities gave $25 million to help people facing food insecurity, a $10 million jump from what it gave a year ago and the largest donation in the charity's history.

The money spreads wide. It supports more than 350 local food banks and nonprofit groups, including 43 Feeding America partner food banks across the eight states where Publix operates. A portion is earmarked for one-time needs that food banks rarely get help with, like buying delivery vehicles and other capital improvements. The gift brings the charity's total hunger investment to more than $103 million since 2015.

"As a food retailer, we believe our greatest opportunity to give back is helping feed our neighbors in need," said Publix CEO Kevin Murphy. More than 8,000 Publix employees are also volunteering at over 150 nonprofits during the company's annual Publix Serves Week, which centers on feeding people locally.

The need is heavy in Publix's own backyard. Feeding America estimates nearly 12 million people are food insecure across the retailer's eight operating states, part of a national food budget shortfall of $33.7 billion. As federal food aid tightens, corporate and private dollars are carrying more of the load, the same pressure driving record demand at food banks from Texas and across the South.
