The NYSE and Blockchain.com Sign a Deal to Offer Tokenized US Stocks and ETFs

    Key Takeaways

    • Blockchain.com and the New York Stock Exchange signed a memorandum of understanding to give Blockchain.com's more than 44 million users access to tokenized US stocks and ETFs, subject to regulatory approval.

    • The service would run on NYSE's planned digital trading platform and is not yet live.

    • The deal follows the SEC's new five-year innovation exemption for onchain trading of some tokenized US stocks.

On September 23, Blockchain.com and the New York Stock Exchange said they had signed a memorandum of understanding to bring tokenized US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs to Blockchain.com's users. The trading would run through NYSE's planned digital alternative trading system, the platform NYSE announced in January to offer around-the-clock trading, fractional shares, stablecoin funding, and immediate onchain settlement. The service is not live yet, and it depends on that platform launching and on regulatory approval.

A data deal alongside the trading plan

The agreement also moves market data between the two companies. ICE Data Services, part of NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange, plans to distribute Blockchain.com's crypto data and analytics to its clients. Blockchain.com plans to add ICE and NYSE stock feeds to its app, giving its more than 44 million confirmed accounts real-time stock information, some of it through June, its AI assistant. The companies did not say when the service could launch, which stocks would be offered, or the financial terms.

Why an incumbent exchange is going onchain

The move puts one of the world's oldest exchanges into the race to trade traditional assets on blockchains. It follows the SEC's September 17 innovation exemption, a five-year relief measure for onchain trading of some tokenized US stocks that requires tokenized shares to carry the same rights as real ones and excludes price-only synthetic products. NYSE signed a similar tokenization agreement with Securitize in March. Citi Institute estimates tokenized assets could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030.

The pattern is hard to ignore. WYDE has tracked the same shift when Coinbase filed to bring single-stock perpetual futures to US traders and when the European Central Bank moved to buy tokenized bonds with its own reserves. The difference here is the protagonist. The New York Stock Exchange is not reacting to tokenization from the outside. It is building the rails.
