DTCC Runs Its First Live Trades of Tokenized Stocks, ETFs and Treasurys

    Key Takeaways:

    • DTCC processed its first live production trades of tokenized securities on Wednesday, covering tokenized stocks, ETFs and US Treasurys across collateral, repo, margin and trading transactions.

    • More than two dozen institutions participated, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock and Vanguard, on infrastructure that safeguards more than $114 trillion in securities.

    • DTCC's digital twins keep the same legal ownership rights as the underlying assets, and the broader tokenization service launches in October.

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, the backbone of US securities settlement, processed its first series of live production trades involving tokenized securities on Wednesday, CoinDesk reported. More than two dozen major institutions participated, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock and Vanguard, moving tokenized equities, ETFs and US Treasurys through collateral transfers, repo, margin movements and securities trades.

The scale behind that sentence is worth sitting with. DTCC safeguards more than $114 trillion in securities and settles the transactions behind most American stock and bond ownership. Unlike earlier blockchain pilots, Wednesday's trades ran in a live production environment using assets already held at DTCC's central depository.

The design matters too. DTCC converts existing securities into blockchain-based digital twins that keep the same legal ownership, dividend and governance rights as the underlying assets. That separates it from the tokenized wrappers some crypto platforms sell, which mirror a stock's price without necessarily carrying the legal rights of owning the share. During the event, JPMorgan converted holdings of the Invesco QQQ ETF into tokens and used them to satisfy margin requirements at CME Group, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF was tokenized as well, and transactions settled on Hyperledger Besu and the Canton Network.

"This validates that it's possible," Mark Wendland, CEO of Canton Strategic Holdings, told CoinDesk, while cautioning that the pilot proves capability rather than demand. DTCC plans to launch its tokenization service broadly in October.

None of this is new as a thesis. What's new is the plumbing itself going live. Within days of the UK standing up a 54-firm tokenization taskforce and Japan reclassifying crypto as a financial instrument, the settlement layer under Wall Street ran real tokenized trades on real assets. Worth watching in October.
