Augustus Raises $180 Million to Build a Stablecoin Clearing Bank at a $1 Billion Valuation

    Key Takeaways

    • Augustus raised $180 million in a Series B led by Tiger Global that values the stablecoin-focused clearing bank at $1 billion, with backing from Hummingbird, QED and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel.

    • The startup is not issuing its own stablecoin. It is building the banking infrastructure that lets institutions move money across both traditional payment rails and blockchain networks, with always-on, programmable settlement.

    • Augustus holds conditional approval for a US national bank charter from the OCC, already clears euros through a regulated entity in Finland, and counts the crypto exchange Kraken among its customers.

Augustus, a startup building a federally chartered clearing bank for fintechs and financial institutions, said Tuesday it raised $180 million to expand its dollar payment infrastructure as stablecoins reshape global finance, CoinDesk reported. The round valued the company at $1 billion, with Tiger Global leading and investors including Hummingbird, QED and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel, the company said in its announcement. Most of the attention in stablecoins has gone to the coins themselves. Augustus is chasing a quieter piece, the correspondent banking that moves dollars between institutions.

Chief executive Ferdinand Dabitz said "distribution breaks at the clearing bank layer," describing legacy systems that are slow, take two days to settle, and close on weekends. His answer is what he calls an AI-native clearing bank, built around stablecoins, programmable money, and settlement that never turns off.

The company does not plan to launch a stablecoin of its own. Instead it wants to be the plumbing that lets banks, fintechs and crypto firms move value across traditional payment systems and blockchains in one place. It won conditional approval for a US national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in May, already clears euros through a regulated entity in Finland, and processes billions of euros a year for customers that include the exchange Kraken. Once final approval lands, it plans to add direct US dollar clearing and expand across Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, where access to dollar banking runs thin.

The through line is stablecoins moving off trading screens and into the core pipes of banking. It follows Visa opening a stablecoin platform for banks and fintechs and every major card network backing x402 so software can pay software in stablecoins. The pattern here is hard to ignore. Worth watching.
